Smashbox's Smash Hits!

When I got my first payslip from full time employment I headed straight to Westfield and bought myself the Smashbox Liquid Halo Foundation. I hadn't heard a great deal about it and I don't really know what made me get it but I did and that my friends was the first ever Smashbox product I bought.
Now two years later I would say that the brand is one of my absolute favourites, up there with the likes of Bobbi Brown and Char Tilbs, I just know I can rely on it for great products that won't break me out and deliver quality every time. I've tried my fair share of Smashbox and I haven't ever hated something the brand has to offer, but these bad boys are definitely, in my opinion, the best of an awesome bunch.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the second high end foundation I ever bought. It's sheer to meduim coverage and feels light and breathable on the skin. It's hydrating too but doesn't look too dewy, which I love because my immensely t-zone will give me that all by itself. It lasts a decent amount of time before it needs to be powdered too!

This is the newest Smashbox offering I've tried and I love it! I know what you're thinking. A primer... Oil? An oil that primes? Whaaaaaaaat? Because I have to admit I thought the same. But dang I love it! This is perfect for the colder months if you're prone to tight, dry skin as it helps to moisturise the skin before applying make-up. I'll cleanse and tone and then apply a few drops, allow it to sink in for a few minutes and then apply my foundation. It gives your skin a lovely dewiness without looking or feeling over greasy.

This is your regular kinda primer (the type with a silicone slip feel) but I love this one when I'm rocking a powder foundation as it creates the smoothest bloody surface ever and doesn't slip off after like 5 minutes like many others I've tried.

I am so obsessed with this powder. Previously I used the M.A.C compact but found that if I used it throughout the day it would cake up, so when translucent powders were on test I opted to try this one as it was a loose powder. Don't get me wrong at first it is a bit of hassle and messy but now I don't even notice it. It rids the skin of immense shine yet doesn't make it look dull and overly matte.

This is a newish addition and it's love. While I really like the Sleek offering (and it's a lot less expensive) I love this more for two reasons. Firstly, it comes with a handy contour guide on the actual mirror so you can look at it as you apply - genius Smashbox babes. And secondly, all three shades are super wearable, which is something I didn't find with the Sleek Contour Kit. There's the contour shade, great for creating shadows, a rich terracotta blush and a perfect non-shimmery highlight shade.

I don't own any BB or CC creams because they all tend to be too dewy for my oily t-zone. But a BB eye cream I can get behind. My undereyes and eyelids are actually some of the driest parts of my combination skin so a hydrating concealer is exactly what I need and this one is a Godsend. It's quick to apply with a twist up brush so you get the perfect amount of product and is easy to just blend with your fingers. Not only does it hydrate, it brightens too - this is the first thing I reach for in my makeup routine.

The Autumn Face - Lips and Eyes?

If we were playing word association and someone was to say ‘autumn’, most people would say ‘cold’ or ‘fallen leaves’ or something to that effect, but me, well I’d probably go for ‘new coat’ or ‘berry lips’ – I mean, they are my favourite things about this season (what can I say I'm a clothes and beauty addict)

I’m always for the rule 'eyes or lips' just like 'boobs or legs', it’s just nicer to accentuate one. However, I think I make an exception in the autumn, teaming rich brown eyeshadow with a berry lip. I love the M.A.C Paint Pot in Constructivist - for darker skin it gives a nice wash of colour without looking too heavy or borderline smoky, then finish the eyes with the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in Caviar Ink.

Having dry skin is the bane of my life and this just gets worse around this time of year. My lips don’t escape this, so a good balm is vital and I like to use moisturising lipsticks during the colder months because cracked lips aren’t an option. I think as long as one feature is still more accentuated, it's fun to experiment with richer tones -just don't go OTT homies.

Love Makeup - Some Current Faves...

I feel that ever since I started working within the realm of beauty journalism, I have become such a floozie when it comes to makeup. I literally have draws and draws of the stuff, some still unopened – and that’s still while giving loads to my besties, mum and sisters.

For instance, I used to have two foundations; my trusty M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid and my YSL Le Teint Touché Eclat; now I have 8 in total. It’s getting ridiculous, I just want to try and buy everything, so I thought it would be a good idea to actually look at some of the products that I’ve been reaching for the most lately.

Clinique Superprimer Universal – It’s lightweight and sinks in so quickly. I like the fact that it’s water-based so I don’t feel like it’s just sitting on my skin.

Smashbox Liquid Halo Foundation – I love the fact that this gives the skin a nice glow while still being quite matte, a God send for us girlies with oily/combination skin.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer – This is my ‘I need to look less dead’ go-to product. It’s also handy when I’m have a good skin day and don’t want to wear foundation but at the same time my eyes look like I’ve had no sleep.

Revlon Photoready Skinlights – This is my newest love. It’s an illuminator that you can either mix into your foundation or use as a highlighter. I like to use it as a subtle highlighter on the tops of my cheekbones – the shimmer is so subtle, which is great because I hate a highlighter where the glitter is chunky (hello 90s).

Laura Mercier Brow Gel – Before this I had just been using clear mascara to keep my brows in place, but I thought it was time I actually tried a gel specifically for grooming brows! It’s great, I mean, it does what it’s supposed to do.

Liz Earle Radiant Glow Bronzer – Again, a subtle glow! The shimmer in this is so finely-milled it’s not even shimmer – it’s like you’ve been sun-kissed.

Revlon Lash Potion – I’m not going to lie, it was the packaging that did it for me. I bought this is Miami and I’d never see it over here (you can get it over here though!) so I instantly wanted it but it’s actually a great mascara. I’m not sure if it’s doing anything for my lashes but I like the brush.

Estee Lauder Pure Colour Cheek Rush – I love to put this on top of my primer but under my foundation. It’s a cheek tint with insane staying power and I find that popping it under my foundation (I don’t wear much) gives that ‘blushing from within’ look, which I love because it looks much more natural.

Shu Uemera Eyelash Curlers – Do I even need to say anything about these beauties? Say hello to fluttery lashes.

M.A.C Lip Liner in Hover – Ahhhh *angels descend and the choir sings* I’ve found my peeeeerfect nude lip liner! I wore this everyday with my M.A.C lipstick in Verve for a good month. It’s the dark skin nude lip combo from heaven. I’m going to do a post about it soon.

Reviewed - Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation

I did something very uncharacteristic the other day (I think it was because it was payday) - I bought a foundation without knowing anything about it.

I hadn't seen anything about it in magazines or, more importantly, read any blog reviews on it and even more importantly, I own NO Smashbox products. But I was already shopping and was on the hunt for a new foundation as two of mine are on the out. Plus the Smashbox counter was so shiny and inviting. I had a look at the shade range (there are ten) and found one that suited my skintone pretty perfectly (I did the jawline test myself as the customer assistant was busy colour matching someone else).

The Claim - Smashbox says it blur imperfections with special liquid lighting technology and was developed in their studios so it is undetectable to the naked eye. The formula is oil-free and so claims to be long-wearing and the coverage is sheer to medium.

The Verdict - Firstly, I give myself a pat on the back for getting my colour so right without a sample, a big 'ol risk especially with a foundation that costs over £25. I got shade 9 which is their second darkest, which isn't great considering they're definitely ladies a few shades darker than me that might want to try this foundation, but still it's better than the high street offerings. Secondly, by the end of a regular day I am shining like a beacon. I put my make up on at around 6.20am everyday and take it off at roughly 7.30pm and have very oily skin so I need always need a bit of blotting and powdering throughout the day, but I have to say this foundation is quite good on the oil front. It's very sheer and lives up to the claim of being 'undetectable' - my editor told me it didn't look like I was wearing foundation. Win.

Although I'd never buy a foundation on the whim again, I really feel like I really lucked out with this one. It's definitely a great foundation if you're not looking for high coverage and simply just want to even out your skin tone in a natural looking way.
